Dyfal Donc a Dâl’, which translates to ’Perseverance Pays’. This is intended to reflect our message to all that hard work and determination pays in the long run. Our aim is to offer the highest standard of education and care in a happy, kind and safe environment, so that each child, whatever their ability, can reach their full potential. In Coed-y-Gof our objective is to create a school community that:

  • Is inclusive and that values diversity and equality
  • Appreciates the individual
  • Encourages respect in pupils towards themselves and others
  • Celebrates achievement
  • Creates an awareness of ‘Welshness’ and nurtures pride in the language
  • Prepares the children for the next step in their education and in life
  • Gives all pupils memorable and valuable experiences

Ysgol Gymraeg Coed y Gof is a primary school which educates children between the ages of four and eleven through the medium of Welsh. It is on the same site as Pentrebane Primary School and takes in children from Western Cardiff. The school is allowed to register up to sixty new children every academic year. A child starts school in the school year (September 1st - August 31st) in which he/she is five.

A meeting is held during the summer term for new parents/guardians to visit the school and meet the teachers. There will also be an opportunity for the children to visit. Children who are eleven on or before the 31st August transfer to a secondary school in the September of that year. The vast majority of Coed-y-Gof pupils attend Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Plasmawr. Applications for school places should be made with accordance to the LEA guidelines.

Our aim is to provide a happy working atmosphere in the school, enabling the child to develop fully in ability, maturity and self confidence. We put an emphasis on learning the basic skills of literacy, numeracy and digital competence and we emphasise the importance of making the work relevant to the child. All areas of the curriculum are taught through the medium of Welsh.

English is taught as a subject from Year 3 onwards. It is important to make the child aware of his environment, his city, his country and his world. By using a thematic approach we ensure a very wide and well-balanced curriculum one based on the National Curriculum Programme of study. A child’s progress is assessed in every section of his work and if a problem is prevalent we will consultant the parents/guardians. Importance is also placed on the child growing and becoming conscious of the Welsh culture and its heritage. The school also has an equal opportunities policy. We promote this policy by including it in the curriculum and the lessons when the opportunity arises.
