We aim to work with you in providing a safe, secure, happy and stimulating environment in which your child will be given every opportunity to develop educationally, socially and physically to the best of his or her ability. We are a committed team of staff, dedicated to providing the best quality of education possible for all our children. We hope that you will find this brochure both helpful and informative and that it gives you an insight into our school life. We are always willing to talk to you about our work and discuss any concerns you may have. We hope that you will soon feel part of our community and be able to talk to us about anything connected with your child and the school.

Ton Yr Ywen is Welsh for ‘Yew Tree Hill’. The school was named after a local farm that used to cover this area. There isn’t a Yew Tree on the school site but there are about 20 different trees spread across the school’s extensive grounds. We have incorporated some of the leaves from those different trees into our badge design, to celebrate the diversity of our school community. We know that every child is different and special.

Every child looks different and has a different personality to every other. They grow and develop in different ways and with different strengths and talents. At Ton Yr Ywen there is a place for every child and we want every child to have the best possible opportunity to flourish and achieve success. The characters on the badge are important features of our approach to teaching and learning.

  • The owl is called WALT (We Are Learning To). He introduces the children to new learning. There is a puppet, model or picture of WALT in every class. In each lesson, WALT helps the children to focus on new knowledge and skills.
  • The squirrel is called NUTS (Now Use This Skill). He reminds the children of skills they have learned and encourages them to apply them in new situations.

‘At Ton Yr Ywen we are all dedicated to helping every child to flourish and achieve all-round success.’ We believe to achieve all-round success, children need to:

  • Be happy and self-confident individuals
  • Be fit and have a healthy life-style
  • Form positive and respectful relationships
  • Develop a life-long love of learning
  • Be literate and numerate
  • Be knowledgeable and skilled
  • Be responsible citizens of Wales and the world
  • Be creative contributors and reflective thinkers
  • Make good choices through knowing right from wrong
