The Exercise and Nutrition Research Program based at the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research (MMIHR) is seeking applicants for an Australian Government Research Training Program PhD Scholarship to undertake innovative research studying the molecular networks underlying exercise-induced mitochondrial biogenesis in humans

Exercise is essential in regulating metabolism and remains the most promising therapy for obesity and associated metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, which has reached epidemic proportions in the developed world. The impact of exercise on whole-body metabolism involves a coordinated network of molecular, cellular and tissue physiological adaptations including mitochondrial biogenesis in skeletal muscle. Professor John Hawley leads an internationally renowned multidisciplinary team conducting translational exercise and nutrition research using human subjects, animal models and cellular systems. A major research theme of this group is to use ‘omics-based technologies (i.e. transcriptomics, proteomics, phosphoproteomics) to map and interrogate the molecular networks (i.e. gene, protein and post-translational modifications, respectively) underlying the health-promoting effects of exercise including skeletal muscle mitochondrial biogenesis.

The successful sholarship recipient will be supervised by Professor John Hawley (Director, MMIHR and the Exercise and Nutrition Research Program) and Dr Nolan Hoffman (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Exercise and Nutrition Research Program). The recipient’s research projects will involve collaboration with ARC grant partners at Victoria University (Professor David Bishop, Institute for Health and Sport) and interactions with expert researchers and health professionals in the fields of metabolism, exercise and nutrition.

The Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research provides a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment for PhD students to pursue an academic and/or industry research career. It has a large academic and support staff dedicated to its research program, substantial research funding, a vibrant PhD program, and world leading national and international collaborative partners.
