The Shipley School is an independent, coeducational day school in Bryn Mawr for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade students. Through our commitment to educational excellence, we develop within each student a love of learning and a desire for compassionate participation in the world.
Prior to serving as the Head of School at St. Michael’s, Michael was the Director of Upper and Middle School Admission, as well as a teacher, advisor, and coach, at St. Christopher’s School in Richmond. Prior to moving to Richmond, he was a classmate, teacher, advisor, and coach at The Roxbury Latin School in Boston. He began his career in independent schools at his alma mater, Germantown Academy, where he was a teacher, advisor, and coach. Before transitioning to education, Michael held a variety of roles in the private and public sectors, including serving as an Assistant Managing Director for the City of Philadelphia and a management consultant.
The mission of Shipley’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is to support Shipley in its aim to be a truly anti-racist and diverse educational institution that embraces social justice for, and offers genuine belonging to, people of all races, colors, ethnicities, religions, sexual orientations, genders, religions, nationalities, socioeconomic statuses, and abilities.
We are committed to cultivating an environment where all members of the Shipley community are engaged, feel respected and valued, grow as individuals, strive for excellence, and have the opportunity to do their best work. We honor and value all differences and are committed to being a safe and inclusive environment for all people.
At Shipley, we believe that students begin to discover the joy of learning at an early age. That’s why we have a Lower School program that provides a strong academic foundation, teaching students as young as pre-K to think critically about the world around them while encouraging them to explore their interests and creativity.
At Shipley, we understand that Middle School is a time of significant change for adolescents. They are developing physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually, and we provide the appropriate environment to nurture this growth. With guidance and empathy supporting an academically challenging curriculum based in critical thinking and creative exploration, our Middle School students develop deep knowledge of themselves as both learners and as people.
At Shipley, our Upper School students are not only active learners—they are leaders as well. Our rigorous college-preparatory program challenges them to discover their passions and their potential, and to take their education to the next level. They are pushed to see how ideas overlap across academic disciplines, and they gain the confidence and self-awareness that will carry them through college and the future.
