Education in Italy is mandatory for children from age 6 to 16. Schools in Italy have three phases: primary school, middle school, and high school. Before a child enrolls in a primary school, he is first sent to kindergarten or “scuola dell’infanzia”, where he learns the fundamentals of counting and reading, as well as socializing. At age 6, a child is enrolled into a primary school or “scuola primaria/elementare” which lasts for 5 years. In primary schools, children are taught the basics  in Italian, English, mathematics, sciences, history and geography, social studies, physical education, and the arts.
