Students are invited to apply for a Doctor of Philosophy scholarship in the area of Nutrition/Exercise Science/Medicine.
Dr Monique Francois from the School of Medicine (SOM), Faculty of Science, Medicine and Health (SMAH) and the Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) at the University of Wollongong (UOW) is seeking to award a PhD Scholarship for a project entitled “Optimising Lifestyle Treatment and Prevention of Diabetes”.
The rising incidence of diabetes threatens to put severe strain on healthcare systems in Australia and globally. Lifestyle interventions, including diet and physical activity, treat the underlying pathophysiology of diabetes and improve cardiometabolic health; ultimately leading to reduced diabetes complications, such as cardiovascular disease.
Simple lifestyle strategies that can easily be implemented into standard-care are urgently needed for patients with insulin resistance, including gestational diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Accordingly, this PhD research will test simple and strategic nutritional interventions that are aimed at improving glycaemic control and cardiometabolic health.
Stipend
The scholarship is for three and a half (3.5) years full-time for doctoral candidates with a stipend of $AUD 28,092 pa (tax free and indexed annually).

With now over 36,000 students, more than 2,400 staff, and an economic impact of around $2 billion in activity annually, UOW is an influential part of its communities and the catalyst for Wollongong’s transformation into a University city. Our students and staff come from diverse backgrounds, and we welcome many international students to our campuses each year. They share a culture that respects openness, inclusiveness, collegiality and diversity.
