Chorister Admissions
A love of singing is the key to becoming a chorister. We are looking for boys and girls who enjoy making music, are enthusiastic about learning and will bring their own passions and personalities to St Peter’s School.
Entry Requirements
Life as a chorister is busy and rewarding, with new adventures and opportunities each day. Choristers must live near enough for the extra duties of the choir to be practicable and typically join the choir between the ages of 8 and 9 and remain until the age of 13. All choristers are educated at St Peter’s School.
Assessments
All prospective choristers will be auditioned by Mr Robert Sharpe, Director of Music at York Minster. Formal singing experience is not required, but children need to be able to sing in tune, pitch notes and be interested in developing their musical talents. Further information will be available about the audition.
Choristers will also sit an entrance exam for St Peter’s 8-13, which will include computer-based maths, English and reasoning tests, a creative writing paper and a group task.
Submitting an Application
We are now accepting chorister applications for J1 (Year 4) entry.
Applicants should be ready to join Year 4 in September . There are no other opportunities to join the choir in other year groups. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Miss Sara Bath on 01904 527391 or email admissions@stpetersyork.org.uk.

Boarding
- We accept a smaller number of overseas boarding pupils each year from age 11 (J4 / Year 7) upwards. Entry is extremely competitive and you should contact us as early as possible and prior to making an application.
- All overseas boarders must have an educational guardian who lives within two hours' drive of the school. We recommend that you appoint a guardian accredited by AEGIS. For more information, please visit our page on Guardians.
- The School has a comprehensive procedure to ensure safe transit of its boarding pupils. Please visit our page on travel arrangements or contact us for more information.
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
- St Peter’s School is an English Language school. In order to cope with the high academic and social demands of the School, pupils must be fluent English speakers.
- We expect a high standard of written and spoken English from all applicants to St Peter’s, including boarding applications, and this will be assessed in the admissions process.
- We may recommend that pupils receive individual tuition in English at the parents’ expense. In this case, we are able to provide English as an Additional Language (EAL) support to assist pupils whose first language is not English.
- The EAL rate for September will be £30 per 40 minute lesson. The charge will be reviewed annually and will be charged in arrears for each term.
Visas and Passports
- St Peter's is a licensed sponsor of Child Study Visas for boarders and parents must state on application whether they wish to apply for a visa.
- Parents and Guardians are asked to note that the School is not responsible for the arrangement and administration of pupil visas and passports.
- In accordance with UK Visas and Immigration regulations copies of overseas boarders’ passports and visas will be kept by the school.
- It is the responsibility of the pupil’s parents via their Guardian to ensure that passports and visas are kept up to date.
- Please note that we do not sponsor study visas for day pupils so you will be asked for evidence of your child's Leave to Remain in the United Kingdom during the application process if they do not have a British, British National Overseas (BNO) or Irish passport.

We welcome enquiries from International Agents and we can be contacted through the British Boarding Schools Network
