The CIPD as we know it today started life in 1913 as the Welfare Workers’ Association (WWA). We’ve been helping people and organisations realise their potential ever since, and today we’re the voice of a worldwide community of around 150,000 members.
We first became known as the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development in 2000, when we were granted a Royal Charter. Today we're known simply as the CIPD, the professional body for HR and people development.
We're the professional body for HR and people development - experts on the world of work and career partner to 150,000 members around the world.
We're the professional body for experts in people at work. For more than 100 years, we've been championing better work and working lives by setting professional standards for HR and people development, as well as driving positive change in the world of work.
With hubs in the UK, Ireland, Middle East and Asia, we're the career partner of choice for 150,000 members around the world. We're the only body in the world that can award Chartered status to individual HR and L&D professionals, and our independent research and insights make us trusted advisers to governments and employers.
We believe work can and should benefit everyone - not just businesses and economies, but the people that drive them and the societies they form part of too.
As a registered Charity, we were established to promote the art and science of the management and development of people for public benefit. Ever since we were founded in 1913 by a group of people responsible for the well-being of factory workers, we've stayed true to the same purpose: we exist to champion better work and working lives for the benefit of individuals, businesses, economies and society.
We’re committed not only to finding and championing ways of defining, organising and managing work that benefit business and create economic value, but also to promoting ways of improving individual working lives that contribute to a fairer and more prosperous society.
We want to create a world of work that's more human. By changing hearts and minds about the purpose of work, the value of people and the role of people professionals, we'll help ensure that work creates value for everyone.
We'll do this by:
Our work to champion better work and working lives takes on a number of guises. We set professional standards and support our members to make a real impact on the work and working lives of the people and organisations they work with. And through our independent research and insights, we influence policy and practice to ensure that work benefits everyone - making us a trusted adviser to individuals, employers, media and policy makers.
