Broadhurst School is a co-educational nursery and pre-preparatory school for children from two to five years plus, situated in a residential area of North West London between Hampstead, West Hampstead and Swiss Cottage.
Our aim is to provide a happy, caring and secure environment in which every child can develop individually and is motivated and encouraged to reach their full potential. We aim to achieve the highest standard of teaching and learning for all children.
We believe that the first experience of school should be both stimulating and inspiring, and we aim to help every child develop as a confident, sociable and motivated learner.
A believer in the importance of good manners, Mrs Sylvester makes a point of shaking hands and making eye contact with each child every day when they arrive at school.
Both half-day and full-day classes are designed to cover, and go beyond, the seven areas of learning set out in the Government’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum:
Half-day classes
Children’s first classes are carefully structured so that their transition from home to school and their subsequent introduction to school activities are positive, rewarding and happy experiences. Parents are encouraged to stay in the classroom for the first few days until their children have settled.
The timetable incorporates daily art and craft activities, singing, role play, construction and free play, garden play and stories, all of which are continued throughout the school. We also introduce pre-reading and pre-writing skills and begin practical numeracy.
Full-day classes
Teachers structure the day to enable children to be composed enough to concentrate, yet free enough to experiment and make mistakes without feeling exposed or self-conscious. Children learn how to engage with other adults and children and build cooperation, through listening, making eye contact, taking turns, being honest, forgiving and being kind and helpful.
A range of enjoyable activities builds their general knowledge and encourages them to develop an interest in their surroundings.
Dedicated music sessions are held each week. Perform run drama sessions, Creative Movements inspire the children through stories and Yoga helps children stretch their imagination as well as their body.
Children have timetabled access to the outside space, climbing equipment and outdoor toys every day, with physical activities taking place indoors in poor weather.
The full-day classes go on outings to museums, art galleries and other places of educational interest, accompanied by staff and parents. Recent visits include the local fire station, Willows Farm and the National Gallery.
Parents are invited to talk to classes about their professions or their heritage, as part of ‘Understanding The World’. We also welcome parents coming in to get involved with activities such as reading, baking or celebrating special occasions like Diwali, Chinese New Year and World Book Day.
Children have a Broadhurst Portfolio that covers the academic year and includes paintings, photos and drawings, providing both a record of their progress and also a wonderful keepsake for parents.
