The subject area for the professor is forest planning. In a scientific sense, forest planning constitutes a framework for integrating information and methods at different levels and from different fields in order to give support for decisions regarding use and management of forests. Within this subject area the professor shall pay special attention to the non-industrial private forestry (family forestry), e.g. preferences and behaviour among these forest owners, as well as to aspects of forest policy and societal development which are relevant for forest planning. An international (European in particular) perspective is essential regarding non-industrial private forestry as well as forest policy.
The analyses concern single forest estates as well as groups of such estates, and timber as well as environmental resources and other ecosystem services. This includes methods to determine how to prioritize different forest interests in different forest areas, as seen from both a forest owner’s and a societal perspective, and methods for management of risk and uncertainty in the analyses. Cooperation with other researchers and research groups is essential, on the faculty level with the Department of Forest Resource Management in particular. Besides scientific cooperation nationally and internationally, interaction with the forest sector (in a broad sense) is important.
