Dubai, UAE: The police and the public prosecutor are investigating the suicide of an Asian university student who was found hanging from the ceiling at his family home in Dubai early this week, police told Gulf News.
Police said on Thursday that the Indian university student ended his life in the early hours of Sunday.
According to a police official from Al Qusais Police Station, the 21-year-old boy who was studying engineering at a private university in Dubai committed suicide at his family home at 5am on Sunday.
Police said the youngster was in his fourth year and was due to graduate this semester. They said the student, identified as Harish, slashed his wrist before hanging himself from the ceiling of his room at his family apartment in Al Qusais.
Police said the boy’s elder sister found him hanging in his room at around 5am on Sunday. Police said the victim is from the state of Andhra Pradesh in India and lived in the UAE with his family. “His family used to live in Ajman, but they recently shifted to Dubai,” police said.
Colleagues react
A number of students studying with Harish told Gulf News that he was a loner and did not socialise much.
“However, he was kind and polite,” a student said.
Colleagues of Harish allege that he could have committed suicide because the university had charged him Dh5,000 for an internship programme with a Dubai company. But a few days into the job, the university got Harish removed from the job as he had scored very low marks in his exams.
“Harish was told by the university management that the Dh5,000 charge was not refundable,” Harish’s colleague told Gulf News.
“The university also informed him that he should pay upfront for the full semester,” he said. The student further added that Harish was asked to pay Dh18,750 for the semester in order to graduate.
The colleague said that these issues could have possibly made Harish depressed leading to his suicide. “His family are not very rich and he was not able to afford cost of paying for the semester to complete his graduation,” the colleague said.
Police said the case has been transferred to the public prosecution for more investigations.
